Growth Models of Developmental Language Disorders
نویسنده
چکیده
The prior quote is from a recent issue of Science with a special section on the topic of developmental timing. The temporal events that guide development are key parts of the puzzle of contemporary molecular genetics. Genes are known to turn on at certain times in development; microRNAs show temporaland tissuespecific patterns of gene expression (cf. Carrington & Ambros, 2003); and genes activate to trigger downstream developmental events removed in time from the triggering event (cf. Gehring & Ikeo, 1999; Marcus & Fisher, 2003). Timing mechanisms are fundamental to the way that inherited elements direct an individual’s growth, whether at the cellular or organism level. The fact that language acquisition is a developmental phenomenon that emerges in the early childhood period is a commonplace observation that is known to parents and scholars alike. The literature is full of debates about the extent to which growth in language early on is attributable to inborn, language-specialized mechanisms; inborn, generalized learning mechanisms that are heavily influenced by environmental input; or fundamental learning 10

Risk Factors of Idiopathic Language Development Disorders in Children
Background: Language Development Disorders (LDD) is a common idiopathic impairment in children. Numerous risk factors play a role in the emergence of this disorder. Objectives: The present study aimed to examine risk factors of LDD in children aged two to five years. Materials & Methods: In this case-control study, 98 children (aged two to five years) with LDD and 98 children without LDD wer...
متن کاملLanguage growth in children with heterogeneous language disorders: a population study
BACKGROUND Language development has been characterised by significant individual stability from school entry. However, the extent to which trajectories of language growth vary in children with language disorder as a function of co-occurring developmental challenges is a question of theoretical import, with implications for service provision. METHODS SCALES employed a population-based survey d...
متن کاملDelayed Referral in Children with Speech and Language Disorders for Rehabilitation Services
Objectives: Speech and language development is one of the main aspects of evolution in humans and is one of the most complex brain functions such that it is referred to as one of the highest cortical functions such as thinking, reading and writing. Speech and language disorders are considered as a major public health problem because they cause many secondary complications in the childhood and a...
متن کاملValue-added predictors of expressive and receptive language growth in initially nonverbal preschoolers with autism spectrum disorders.
Eighty-seven preschoolers with autism spectrum disorders who were initially nonverbal (under 6 words in language sample and under 21 parent-reported words said) were assessed at five time points over 16 months. Statistical models that accounted for the intercorrelation among nine theoretically- and empirically-motivated predictors, as well as two background variables (i.e., cognitive impairment...

Low birth weight (LBW) and preterm birth are one the most important causes of death in the world and therefore are considered as one of the major health problems. Global statistics demonstrates an increase in the prevalence of low birth weight in the developing countries. Low birth weight infants are exposed to complications such as major neurosensory impairements, cerebral palsy, cognitive and...
